Hulu is wrecking my writing time lately. There’s too much good content to ignore.
-To relax: watch Chris Evert and Martina Navratrilova play classic Wimbledon
- For rat-a-tat kitchen drama: The Bear, about a Chicago sandwich shop being revamped by a Noma-loving but down home Italian American boy with the most limpid eyes since Nic Cage.
-For a laugh and a cry: Emma Thompson in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. Body love, sex workers, transactional sex, humor.
What are you binging lately?
The Experiment is crazy, the basic idea is the host, Nathan Felder, helps someone practice for a difficult conversation. But it’s the lengths they go to that makes the show funny, and the way people react that makes it interesting. It’s hard to judge the tone--I thought it might be just mocking people that were tricked into being on camera, which would suck. It’s not like that really, but it’s not clear how Felder views his subjects. Is he making fun of them or really trying to help them, albeit in a bizarre way. I’m not sure. See what you think and let me know!
Navratilova-Evert! I grew up watching that era of players. I thought Bjorn Borg was the coolest guy ever. I just started watching The Experiment on HBO. I’m not sure what to make of it yet, but it’s definitely unlike anything I’ve seen before.
